Mythic March Begins!

Spring is almost here and inspiration is in the air. Flowers are starting to bloom and as we move into the beginning of Spring one of my favorite yearly events has started! That’s right, Mythic March is here! Haven’t heard of it before? No worries, allow me to explain a bit. Mythic March is kind of like the NaNoWriMo of the crafting world, but with a more laid back and relaxed pace.

And idea I discovered a long time ago when scrolling through the blog Domythic Bliss, the point of the month long event is simply to create!

What a perfect way to get things moving again after spending the colder winter months all cozy, lazily relaxing in our homes and visiting loved ones. So every year, come the month of March I pick a project or two and really try to power through them. As a costumer and entertainer I am often working on something in my fairy workshop, but when I have no deadlines it is easy to get sidetracked everytime a new inspiration strikes. With Mythic March I use it to set a deadline; Just how much can I create in a one month period?

Which brings us to this year….What’s my plan?

Firstly, I would like to create a new spring fairy using recycled pieces of my old bedroom ceiling from my childhood. It was a tulle canopy that covered the entire ceiling in shades of purples and blue with similarly colored Hydrangea flowers, but since it has been taken down I plan to turn it into a faebulous skirt fit for a fairy queen.

And second, I plan to finish a project that has been on my work bench for a very long time. A replica of a historical tea-gown circa 1810-1820 in lavenders and silver embroidery. I will post pictures when I have made a bit more progress on these projects in my blog posts, but if you are ever curious about progress pictures please feel free to follow my social media both on Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, & Facebook where I share all kinds of behind the scenes looks at what goes on in my workshops. these links can be found in the side bar.

Fairy Friday: Keeping the Magic with a Day Job

Hello Dearies and welcome to a new series I am hoping to be able to keep up with, probably one a twice a month pattern. Fairy Fridays! You’ve already had a taste of the Mermaid Monday posts, so let’s give the Fae a day too.

For this weeks discussion, let us talk about how to keep the magic alive in yourself and your day to day while still holding a day job to pay the bills shall we. I know that the thought getting up early every morning, dawning a “sensible” wardrobe, and trudging off to sit in a cubicle for 8 hours a day is not a fun thought for any fairy. But, it is important to remember there are plenty of ways you can still include a bit of magic into your professional world.

A desk fit for a Faerie – If you hold a office position that provides you with a desk to sit and work at there are quite a few ways to transform your work area into something that reflects you without getting in the way of your ability to work.

The first, and simplest option is your desktop background. Pick something work appropriate that makes you feel more at ease. After all you are going to be spending a good chunk of your day staring at it. For my desktop I tend to pick something seasonal, nature related, and subtle. whether that is a single flower blooming in the snow or autumn leaves blowing on a breeze. This allows me to still feel a sense of connection to the outside world while being surround by walls with little window access.

Fairies are invisible and inaudible like angels. But their magic sparkles in nature.”  ~Lynn Holland

Another way to breathe a little life into your work space is to consider a small desk plant. I like to keep things like bamboo, a small flower, or  even a poinsettia around the holidays. This adds a bit of color, some oxygen, and a touch of happiness to any dreary cubicle.

And lastly, Let us know forget about desk accessories. Plastic or metal organizers can be dolled up with a coat of paint and some sparkle or a pen holder with some sparkles and flowers glued on strategically can create something special and unique while still fitting in the confines of what is appropriate in an office setting.

Let your inner light shine through your accessories, use the little details to subtly let the whole world see you have a creative side.

There is one other big way you can add some more of faetastic elements to your work day, and it is often in the most overlooked strategy…How you accessorize! Now I’m sure you are sitting there going thinking, “But Saelyyia my company has a pretty strict dress code so, how can I still show off my inner Fae spirit without getting in trouble?” The answer is in the little things. While you may have to meet specific standards such as the all encompassing “business casual” there are many easy ways around the rules. The first few mostly apply to our female friends, but not all of them.

Let us start at the beginning of our day shall we?It is early morning, you have a hot cup of tea or coffee sitting next to you on your vanity while you blink the sleep away from your tired eyes. You stare foggily into the mirror trying to decide how you want to look today.

For your hair, perhaps you want to clip in a ribbon at the end of your braid, or a butterfly adorns your curls, or you have bobby pins holding back some stray hair with little bumblebees on them.

For your make-up perhaps you want to add a bit of extra shimmer to your highlighter or some glitter to your shadows. You could even go really out of the box and go with a metallic lip for the day.

But of course these are all just suggestions based on things I do in my daily life.

Happy Holidays!

What is FaeNetwork.com

faenetwork

Hello friends, as the weather turns cold and we tend to spend more time indoors bundled up nice and toasty and days continue to grow shorter I want to take a moment to talk to you about something very near and dear to my heart. In previous posts you have seen me mention a website called Faenetwork, but it occurred to me I never took the time to explain what that is.

FaeNetwork is a forum that provides an online place for the fairy community, whether that be performers, enthusiasts, scholars, costumers, or just open minded individuals looking for a friendly place to experience some magic. A newer forum it has only being around a little under two years now, only one of which has it been out of Beta as it was modeled in a similar fashion to its inspiration and “big sister” forum of sorts, MerNetwork (The Mermaiding Community Forum). So naturally because it is such a young site, like many it is a bit quiet at the moment. However, when there is activity the magic can be found in every post.

However, It is more than just a bunch of forum threads of people talking about wings and flower headdresses. FaeNetwork is for fostering connections in the community. There are sections for posts in the media, ideas for performers, tutorials, a meet-up section, and so much more. But it can’t continue to grow without help. We are calling to all fae out there to come join us and help us create a truly special corner of the internet for ourselves where we can share our passion for fantasy with each other.
